Indiana University Center for Global Health and the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) are seeking a BC/BE subspecialist in Medical Oncology, Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Radiation Oncology or other suitable oncology subspecialty, to serve as the AMPATH Oncology Team Leader in Eldoret, Kenya beginning July, 2021.

The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) is a well-respected international partnership between Moi University (MU) and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), and a group of partner institutions collectively referred to as the AMPATH Consortium, led by Indiana University. AMPATH Oncology has grown to be a successful multi-institutional program led by the IUSCCC that serves the catchment area of western Kenya. The primary goal of this position is to increase the clinical and research workforce capacity in low to middle income countries, and to develop North American opportunities in the field of global oncology. Job responsibilities of the AMPATH Oncology Team Leader include leading the growth of global research and education that is impactful in screening, prevention, and treatment of cancer, including palliative care. It is expected that the Team Leader will successfully compete for extramural funding within 1-2 years and publish his/hers work focused on bidirectional innovation (i.e. work will advance health equities in Indiana and around the world). Specific duties include supervising resident/student oncology consult service of MTRH, providing outpatient care in an urban and/or rural clinic serving patients with cancer or blood diseases, developing curricula for Kenyan and American post-graduate trainees, and coordinating electives for visiting fellows, residents and students from Indiana University and collaborating medical schools and training programs.

The Oncology Team Leader will join a team of North American health professionals who work alongside their Kenyan counterparts at MU and MTRH. Current team members include senior, mid-level and junior faculty clinicians in multiple disciplines who serve long-term (one year or more) in Kenya, clinical and implementation science researchers, and multiple short-term volunteers.

The Oncology Team Leader will directly report to the Director of the IUSCC Center for Global Oncology and Health Equity and will coordinate on ground activities with the Executive Field Director of the AMPATH Consortium and the Director of the IU Center for Global Health. Mentorship for this position will come from senior faculty from the IUSCCC, other faculty from the AMPATH Consortium partnership, and permanent North American senior staff on the ground in Kenya from various departments including Medicine, Pediatrics, Pathology, Palliative Care and Surgery.
