Deciphering the Role of non-coding Pykons in Colorectal Cancer

The evidence to date indicates that ncRNAs are more numerous than protein-coding messenger RNAs (mRNAs). We discovered that the computationally predicted class of molecules known as pyknons represents a novel category of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). We find also that pyknon containing regions undergo marshaled transcription with expression profiles that depend on tissue and cell state. Specifically, we find that in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients these transcripts’ expression can predict overall survival. Notably, we demonstrate for several transcripts that their expression is controlled by TP53 and that these transcripts are involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). To further decipher the role of these genes in CRC we propose to perform collaborative studies at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Yonsei University in Korea, Hospital AC Camargo and Barretos Cancer Hospital both in Brazil.
