Recently, the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPC) introduced a new nomenclature for cervical colposcopy assessment. The new nomenclature aims at simplifying colposcopic evaluation and at increasing its reproducibility. Many countries plan to implement the new terminology. NCI investigators are collaborating on a study of interobserver reproducibility using colposcopic images from the Biopsy Study. This is the first large scale effort to evaluate the new terminology using cervical images and involving the leadership of IFCPC. The Biopsy Study provides a unique resource for evaluation of colposcopic practice, as all women enrolled in the study had at least one, but often multiple biopsies taken, resulting in excellent cervical disease ascertainment.
