Medical knowledge seekers (e.g. general public, patients, health professionals, researchers, journalists) should be able to access readable, accurate and timely Wikipedia content. But Wikipedias content is not always as good as it could be. We plan to use cancer as an exemplar for the wider medical research community, and establish a process for engaging the charity and research communities to help create accurate and accessible information on Wikipedia. We will recruit a CRUK Wikipedian in R esidence to foster collaboration between CRUK staff, Wikipedians, the research community and the general public, with the aim of improving Wikipedia's cancer-related content, as well as evaluating the successes of both the content created, and the endeavour itself. The Wikipedian in Residence will: - Organise events to create or expand existing cancer-related articles - Support Wikipedians already editing relevant content to increase the cooperation between institutions - Work with CRUK staff and scientists to explain Wikipedia's and other projects' practices and how they can to contribute - Oversee the transition of CRUKs information resources to a Creative Commons license This is the first proposal for a Wikipedian in Residence for a medical research organisation. We hope that this project will create a robust case study for other medical research organisations to learn from and engage with Wikipedia. We want the project to extend beyond the activities of the CRUK Wi kipedian in Residence, and catalyse ongoing engagement by the wider medical research community in health information provision on Wikipedia.
