The goal of my project is to bring precision diagnostics and capacity building to enable cancer care in underserved regions of Sri Lanka. Specific goals involve developing precision diagnostic tools for the detection of cancer biomarkers including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and PCR-based assays as well as establishing telepathology and biobanking facilities. Since cancer treatment strategies including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are already available in Sri Lanka, providing subspecialty pathology expertise to the local pathologists would bring about a pivotal change in the management of cancer patients. It will also establish a partnership for building a robust cancer care program by enhancing routine diagnostic services and establish cancer screening, surveillance and early detection. This partnership will pave the way for well-annotated tissue resources for collaborative research and function as a conduit to transfer knowledge and technology for a future generation of healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka and elsewhere.
